Love is Blue, C Cubed, (Venue 50) Review:

“accomplished, emotional and riveting

**** 4 Stars

LAMBCO Productions really are producing quality LBGTQI+ theatre work this year with their set of fours shows running in rep at C Cubed in Riddles court, it’s refreshing to see them tackle a play with the same style and quality as there musicals programme.

Love is Blue, written by Don Cotter explores the chance meeting of Olly (Sam Walter) a slick city trader still struggling to come to terms with the death of his boyfriend, and guilt plagues him as he comes across Aaron (Andrew Ewart) homeless and living on the stress and crutching on alcohol. What lead Aaron to where he is? And can Olly reach out beyond his pain to make a connection and perhaps change both their lives for the better?

Cotter’s script is an emotive and  deeply thoughtful exploration of the human ability to form connections, searching our souls and confront emotions in the complexity of human need to not only be loved but to feel love too, can love ever be truly blue? This play proves love can be anything we choose it too be.

Walter’s and Ewart’s performances are finely nuanced with a deep sense of understanding and compassion but always keeping it real. They shy away from turning it into soap opera but make it all the more real. Both actors are very easy to connect with and both hold wonderful eye contact with their audience that engages them all the more.

Prav Mj’s direction is on the money, making the most of the intimacy of the space, although the pacing can be a little sluggish, these moment do allow the viewer to digest the emotional drama of the piece.

As the curtain fell, you do wish there was just a bit more to the story, perhaps there will be down the line, for now Love is Blue is a truly accomplished, emotional and riveting addition to any Fringe Diary.
