The Edinburgh Festivals are well and truly over as the nights start getting darker much earlier in the evenings. However there is much on offer across the country in our theatres to keep the lights sparkling well into the night. So lets go take a little round up!
Festival Theatre, Edinburgh.
Big musicals are the order of the day at the Festival Theatre as “On Your Feet!” arrives on stage from the 7th to the 12th October. Telling the inspiring true love story of Emilio and Gloria Estefan and charts their journey from its origins in Cuba, onto the streets of Miami and finally to international superstardom. It wowed the audiences in London and not its Edinburgh’s turn to get in the groove.
The legendary cross-dressing comedy of Eddie Izzard comes to the Festival Theatre stage on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th October as he presents Wunderbar and looks set to sell out.
Big musicals return again with Bill Kenwright’s new production of Kander and Ebb’s landmark musical, CABARET. Directed by National Theatre Director Rufus Norris, the production has enjoyed two smash hit West End runs at The Lyric and The Savoy theatres. The role of Emcee will be played by John Partridge and the production will play the 5th to the 9th of November.
The Festival theatre will bring 2019 to a close with “How the Grinch Stole Christmas the Musical” playing the 26th November to 1st of December. This is followed by the traditional Ballet from Scottish Ballet which this years sees “The Snow Queen” take to the stage. The production will run from 7th to the 29th December.

King’s Theatre, Edinburgh
The autumn season see’s the King’s annual focus on the best dramatic touring plays, coupled with musicals, traditional variety and the annual Pantomime.
Opening the season with the genre break play, Written by Shelagh Delaney when she was nineteen, A Taste of Honey is one of the great taboo-breaking plays of the 1950s, offering an explosive celebration of the vulnerabilities and strengths of the female spirit in a deprived and restless world. Jodie Prenger (One Man, Two Guvnors, Abigail’s Party) stars in this exciting new production – featuring a live soul band on stage! The production will take to the stage Tuesday 24th September to Saturday 28th September.
Following a sold-out run at Hampstead Theatre, don’t miss the astonishing true story of the man who made Hollywood’s greatest diva’s beautiful. PRISM features Double Olivier Award-winning Robert Lindsay in Terry Johnson’s delightfully witty and poignant play based on the extraordinary life of double Oscar-winning cinematic master Jack Cardiff; “the man who made women look beautiful” (Vanity Fair). Joining Lindsay is the acclaimed Tara Fitzgerald (Game of Thrones, Brassed Off). Prism will play from Monday 28th October to Saturday 2nd November.
The Edinburgh institution that is the The Edinburgh Gang Show will mark its diamond anniversary this year as the 60th production takes to the King’s stage from Tuesday 19th to Saturday 23rd November.
The King’s will bring the year to a close with its award winning and acclaimed Pantomime Spectacular as Allan Stewart, Grant Stott and the now very much better following a bout of ill health, Andy Gray bringing Goldilocks and the Three Bears to the Kings and they promise to make this one the biggest and best yet. Produced by Qdos the panto will run Saturday 30th November 2019 – Sunday 19th January 2020.

The Scottish home of the biggest and best of the west end kicks off its autumn season with the premier of the 20th anniversary international touring production of Mamma Mia! the mega hit continues to pack them in, in London’s west end and will play Edinburgh from 19th – 28th September.
The Musicals keep coming with We Will Rock You playing the playhouse from 7th – 12th October followed by the London Palladium production of The King and I taking to the boards from the 17th to the 26th October.
Its then time to step into some stockings and suspenders and do the Time Warp as the eternally youthful Rocky Horror Show comes to the Playhouse from 28th October – 2nd November. If you like dancing in high heels a brand new production of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert featuring Joe McFadden and produced by Jason Donavan, the glitz fest will be on stage from the 5th -9th November.
The Playhouse will end the year with an epic run of the Disney acclaimed smash Hit The Lion King, which will open on Thursday 5th of December 2019 and runs until Sunday 29th March 2020. This will be the hot ticket over the Christmas season and will provide an unmatched evening of theatre at its most magical.

The Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh.
Scotland’s premier producing house has already started its autumn season with Solaris which is wowing audiences and critics alike. The production written by Lyceum artistic director David Grieg will play the 12th September to 5th October.
Love Song to Lavender Menace is a beautifully funny and moving exploration of the love and passion it takes to make something happen and the loss that is felt when you have to let it go. After a sell-out success in The Lyceum’s Rehearsal Studio and a critically-acclaimed run at the Fringe and in New York, Love Song to Lavender Menace returns to The Lyceum main stage from the 9th to 12th October.
The Lyceum will see out the year with a production of brand new Play Barber Shop Chronicles which will take to the stage from 23rd October to the 9th November. They will then present there annual Christmas treat which this year see’s An Edinburgh Christmas Carol on stage from the 28th November 2019 to 4th January 2020.

King’s Theatre, Glasgow:
Heading west to grand dame of Bath Street will open its Autumn season with the Dolly Parton classic, 9 to 5, following a sell out run in London’s Savoy Theatre the productions comes to the King’s from the 8th to 12th October.
Another west end transfer following a run at the Shaftsbury Theatre is Motown the musical, which will play a residence at the Kings from 29th October to the 16th November and is sure to be a swinging night out.
The Kings will close 2019 in traditional style with its annual pantomime. Which for the third year running will be produced by QDOS pantomimes and will see Elaine C Smith and Jonny Mac returning alongside Jonathan Watson for Jack and the Beanstalk. Its been 30 years since this title last featured at the King’s and the gang are promising the most magical of adventures and the panto will run 30th November 2019 to 5th January 2020.

Theatre Royal, Glasgow:
The Theatre Royal will present its usual mixture of drama, dance, opera and musicals and opens there season with the stage version of The Exorcist which will chill the Glasgow audiences from the 19th – 21st September.
The Theatre Royal’s resident company, Scottish opera will present Tosca which takes to the stage from the 16 to the 26th October. The company will also present a programme of workshops and access events to co-inside with the show.
The break out hit of the Edinburgh Fringe 2018 returns to Scotland following a sell out success at the Arts Theatre, London. SIX will play the Theatre Royal from the 5th to the 10th of November.
The Theatre Royal will see out 2019 with the Queen Juggernaut We Will Rock You! which will perform from the 9th to the 28th December and is sure to get any Christmas Party night going with a bang.

His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen
The jewel of the north opens its Autumn season with the titular classic Annie, featuring Lesley Joseph in the role of Miss Hannigan and begs the question will the sun come out tomorrow? It will play HMT from 24th to 28th September.
The musicals keep coming with Saturday Night Fever taking to the HMT stage from 8th to the 12th October, followed by Dolly Partons 9 to 5 performing 22nd to 26th October. They are joined by The Bodyguard on stage the 5th to the 9th November, and Kander and Ebb’s Cabaret bring the musicals to a close as it hits the HMT boards from 12th to the 16th November.
His Majesty’s will bring the curtain down on 2019 in traditional style with there annual Pantomime, once again produced by Qdos and featuring local favourite Alan McHugh, who will be joined by a new line up of stars. Cinderella will play from 30th November 2019 – 5th January 2020 and is sure to be the Fairy Godmother of Panto’s.
