Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2019 Preview: Going Local!

2019 Marks the 72nd Annual Fringe Festival  and it all kicks off this weekend! The biggest arts festival in the world will take over every conceivable space in the city. It will run in tandem with the International Festival, The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, The International book Festival and The Arts Festival.

Whilst performers and companies from around the world make there way to the capital to show off there skills over the course of the three and half week melting pot of Theatre, Comedy, Music, Children’s Show, Cabaret and Musical Theatre there are many home grown productions worth looking at.

Captivate Theatre at The Fringe!

One of the greatest success stories over the last decade of the fringe is the emergence of Captivate Theatre Company, starting with just three shows on the edge of town they now occupy the main theatre during the day at the Rose Theatre as part of Gilded Balloon, as well as there self written shows Romantic Romeo and Brave Macbeth which will be performed at Gilded Balloon at the Museum and Pleasance Courtyard respectively.

2019 will see the company produce a record breaking 10 shows! Returning from 2018 are the Smash hit successes “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “13 the musical” and “Brave Macbeth”. Joining them will be new productions of “Bugsy Malone”, “All Shook up”, “Romantic Romeo”, “Sister Act”, “Jekyll and Hyde” as well as “Oliver”. Oliver will see the company produce the acclaimed Theatre Royal Drury Lane Production.

Also in departure for the company they will present there first play on the fringe “Gregory’s Girl” will take to the stage of the basement theatre at the Rose and promises to be comedy gold.

Captivate can truly lay claim of having something for everyone so be sure to snap those tickets up.

Edinburgh Little Theatre Return!

Long standing fringe venue, The Hill Street theatre was given a new lease of life in 2018 with the arrival of local company Edinburgh Little Theatre, it was such a success there back for 2019 with another blend of self produced productions and guest productions

Particular highlights include “American Idiot”, the Greenday rock opera that inspired a new generation into the theatre with its dystopian themes. Directed by acclaimed award winning director Liam Rudden it promises big things. Rudden will also direct the return of Sailor to the Fringe as “Thief” returns to Hill Street, for a play of raw emotional power this is the one to catch.

Elsewhere a charming original production of Oliver sits alongside summer pantomime with Mother Goose making a Fringe debut. Big musicals in the form of Avenue Q will also been offer.

All productions from ELT can be found at the Hill Street Theatre in the Newtown.

Edinburgh Music Theatre Double Bill

Renown for it’s successful spring productions, EMT return with there annual offering for the Fringe, “Anthems” has become a regular feature of EMT’s fringe programme offering a selection of big show tune from both the West End and Broadway. There second offering is a departure from the usual Disney numbers to looking at the silver screen with “Movie Music”

Both productions will play each evening over the course of there 5 night run.

EMT productions will be performed at St Andrew’s and St George’s West.

Bohemians on the Fringe!

Long standing company the Bohs will return for just two days of the fringe with A Bohemian Fairy-tale, fusing together that magic of fairy tales with the music of kid friendly musicals including, Brave and Shrek.

It promises to be a charming evening in Stockbridge.

Bohemians will perform at St Stephens Church in Stockbridge.

The Burton goes to the west end

In a departure for The Brunton theatre, located in the heart of Musselburgh just a short hop from Edinburgh City Centre, they are collaborating with local Producer and Musical Director Tommie Travers and presenting a new production of Lionel Bart’s Classic “Oliver”. This production based on the acclaimed Theatre Royal Drury Lane reimagining will feature a large cast of Local Performers. Backed with a professional production team and live orchestra you can be assured the west end will arrive on the east coast this Fringe.

Oliver will be performed at the Brunton Theatre, Musselburgh.

Elsewhere!

There are so many more local companies to keep an eye out for! especially Interabang Productions who will bring there 5 Star production of “Being Lisa” to the Fringe for just 3 performances at St John’s Church in the heart of the west end of the city. This is one unmissible production.

Bare Production are also back and have already sold out there run of “Addams Family” so keep an eye out for return tickets!

And Finally!

The shows and productions listed above are just the tip of the iceberg with so many local companies from with in the city and further afield delivering there contributions to the biggest arts festival in the world.  So get yourself ready, and get out there and see them.
